Department of Medical Biology
The Department of Biology was founded in 1956. The founder of the department and its first head was Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Nina Semenovna Volkova.

Thanks to the efforts of the teaching staff, the material base was created, educational and methodical work was established. Along with the usual, necessary for everyday work, drugs, tables, slides, microscopes, technical teaching aids created a museum of the department, for which students and staff of the department (personally its head) brought unique exhibits from expeditions and trips. They formed the basis of the educational museum, which included various collections of exhibits from Ukraine, Russia, Central Asia and Cuba.
From the first day of existence at the department under the leadership of NS Volkova conducted scientific work. For 25 years, the research team has been working on parasitology (medical helminthology). As a result, three dissertations were defended. Candidates of biological sciences became senior lecturer RM Omelaeva, assistants NP Moskvich, GI Tokhtar. More than 100 scientific papers were published. Associate Professor NS Volkova, senior lecturer RM Omelaeva, teachers LL Shevchenko, LA Mayboroda participated in the All-Union Society of Helminthologists, the Republican Scientific Society of Helminthologists and Parasitologists. At present, together with the regional SES, self-supporting studies of the helminthological situation in the fields where wastewater is used are being conducted, and the epidemiology of malaria and opisthorchiasis in the Luhansk region is being studied.
Since 1982, with the arrival of Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor SM Fedchenko, who became the head of the department, begins a new stage in the history of the department. From September 5, 2013 to August 2014, the head of the department is Professor Smirnov SN

The Department of Histology, Cytology and Embryology was founded in 1956 and was located in the building on Oboronnaya Street.
MA. Skutsky
The first head of the department was K. b. Ph.D., Associate Professor Mykhailo Arsentiyovych Skutsky, student of Professor NI Zazibina, a participant in the fighting of the Great Patriotic War, was awarded many orders and medals, including the Order of Alexander Nevsky. He was the first to head the department, prepare it for the educational process, provide the necessary educational equipment (microscopes, micropreparations, tables, etc.), created an embryological museum. Under the guidance of associate professor Skutsky MA conducted research to study the reactive changes in the peripheral nervous system of the digestive tract.
VV Michalsky
From 1973 the department was headed by Doctor of Medicine, Professor Vsevolod Vsevolodovich Mikhalsky (1973-1987). After graduating from the Odessa Medical Institute and graduate school, under the guidance of Professor FA Volynsky, in 1956 VV Mikhalsky was sent to the Luhansk Medical Institute as an assistant at the Department of Normal Anatomy, where he completed and then defended his dissertation in Odessa. Under the guidance of Professor VV Since 1973, the staff of the department began to study the morphological changes of various departments of the central nervous system under the influence of endogenous and exogenous factors, which is reflected in the printed works and planned PhD theses. The department establishes close scientific contact with the Brain Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences,
1983 was special in the history of the institute and the department. According to the order of the Ministry of Health, foreign students began studying at the Luhansk Medical Institute in September 1983. Thus, 55 students from 16 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East were enrolled in the first year of the medical faculty in the 1983-1984 academic year. Therefore, the staff of the department began a new responsible work on training doctors for foreign countries.
L.D. Starlichanova
From 1987 to 1989 the duties of the head of the department were performed by associate professor Larysa Dmytrivna Starlychanova. At this time, the department intensively conducted an experiment to model the impact of environmental factors of deep mines, performed comprehensive research work in conjunction with the Department of Human Anatomy. Educational and methodical work was intensified. Methodical instructions for independent work of students from the section "Special histology" are prepared and printed. Progressive teaching methods were widely used in lectures and practical classes, and students' scientific work was revived.
L.D. Savenko
In 1989 the department was headed by Doctor of Medicine, Professor Lyudmila Danylivna Savenko, a graduate of Luhansk Medical Institute. Under her leadership, the staff of the department was actively engaged in educational and methodical work, conducted a search for new forms of student learning. The department is equipped with a computer class, developed computer programs that are implemented in the educational process. Tests are widely used to intensify the learning process and control students' knowledge. Improving the educational and methodical work, the teaching staff of the department under the leadership of Professor L.D. Savenko is constantly preparing for publication textbooks, guidelines for teachers and students in the course of histology, cytology and embryology. In 1989, the embryological museum was reconstructed and expanded at the department. The exposition of the museum is replenished with electrified stands, gallery of portraits of outstanding histologists, as well as stained-glass stands of educational-methodical and patent-licensing work of the department. Research work is successfully performed, the main direction of which is the study of morphological changes in the structures of the nervous and endocrine systems under the influence of environmental factors. Sixth candidate dissertations were defended on this topic under the supervision of prof. L.D. Savenko. Much attention was also paid to patent and license work. Thus, Lyudmila Danylivna received the honorary badge "Inventor of the USSR". Since 1997, the department is housed in a new morphological building and in terms of area and equipment is the largest department of this profile in Ukraine. the main direction of which is the study of morphological changes in the structures of the nervous and endocrine systems under the influence of environmental factors. On April 1, 2016, the Department of Medical Biology, Histology and Embryology, Microbiology and Hygiene was reorganized and disbanded by joining the Department of Topographic Anatomy, Pathomorphology, Forensic Medicine and Medical Legislation. As a result, today two separate departments have been formed - the Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology, Pathological Morphology and Forensic Medicine with Medical Legislation and the Department of Microbiology, Hygiene and Ecology.
Also, in a short period of time the material base of the department was improved, modern equipment - a microscope - was purchased, etc. The department again began to accept entrants to graduate school.
In 2015, after the University moved to Rubizhne, the Department of Topographic Anatomy, Pathological Morphology and Forensic Medicine with Medical Legislation was established. Acting Vovk Yuriy Mykolayovych - Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Honored Worker of Public Education of Ukraine became the head of the department.
Vovk Yu.M. continues the best traditions of the department both in educational and methodical, and in the scientific plan.
Professor Vovk Yu.M. is the author of 230 articles, 6 monographs, more than 40 inventions and 54 proposals.
In 2016 the department was merged. Thus, it became the Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology, Pathological Morphology and Forensic Medicine with Medical Legislation. Acting Associate Professor Alexander Pavlovich Sysoenko became the head of the department.
Modern Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology
According to the order of the Rector of the State Institution "Lugansk State Medical University" of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Professor IV Ioffe (Order №58 of 31.08.2016 "On the reorganization of the departmental structure of the State Institution" Lugansk State Medical University ") Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology, Pathological Morphology and Forensic Medicine with medical legislation was reorganized into two departments: Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology (Head - Assoc. Prof. Andrushenko VV) and the Department of Normal Physiology, Pathological Physiology and Pathological Morphology, Forensic Medicine with Medical Legislation (Head - Assoc. Prof. Glazkov EO)
Since September 1, 2016, the department has been headed by Victoriia Valeriivna Andrushenko – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, a graduate of the Medical Faculty of Lugansk State Medical University.
After graduating from university, Andrushenko V.V. worked at the Department of Medical Biology as a graduate student, assistant, associate professor of the department. In 2006 she defended her dissertation on "Structural and functional features of the gastric mucosa of rats of different ages with changes in immune status" (Diploma of Candidate of Sciences DK No. 033403, Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine, March 9, 2006).
The Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology for this period includes: Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences Smirnov S.M., assistant Smirnov A.S., assistant Mirzebasov M.A., assistant Babkova T.Yu., assistant Yanchevskyi O.V., assistant Haidash O.I., senior laboratory assistant Shchelgachova S., laboratory assistant Peretiatko A.М.
The scientific direction of work is formed according to scientific researches of department, namely: changes of a morphological and functional condition of fabric in cases of influence of exogenous factors and metabolic disturbances and their correction. The lecturers of the department have completed full-time postgraduate studies and defended PhD theses under the guidance of Professor of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences Smirnov S.M.: Smirnov Anton Serhiiovych "Morphological and functional state of the stomach under conditions of long-term action of epichlorohydrin on animals" (Kharkiv 2018), and Mirzebasov M.A. "Pathogenesis of disorders of the duodenal wall under the action of light compounds of epoxy resins" (Kharkiv 2020). Currently, two candidate dissertations on the scientific topic of the department are being written under the guidance of the Professor of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Rector of SE "LSMU".
During the work of the department, there were staff changes and now the modern structure of the department includes: the head of the department, associate professor, Ph.D. Andrushenko V.V., Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Rector of SE “LSMU” Smirnov S.M., Ph.D., assistant Mirzebasov M.A., assistant Babkova T.Yu., Assistant Khanina O.V., senior laboratory assistant Chumak N.S., senior laboratory assistant Peretiatko A.M.
SMIRNOV ANTON SERHIIOVYCH, Associate Professor of the Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology. He graduated from Luhansk State Medical University in 2014. With the start of hostilities, he moved to Rubizhne, where from 2014 he worked first as an assistant at the Department of Biology, Histology and Embryology of Luhansk State Medical University, while acting as dean for work with foreign students. He taught medical biology and histology in Ukrainian and English. In 2018, he defended his dissertation for the title of Candidate of Medical Sciences, and later received the title of associate professor. He took an active part in improving the methodological base of the department, in creating methodological manuals for domestic and English-speaking students. He worked at the department until July 2021.
