The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy was established by the order of the Rector of the University №19 dated 08.02.2002. The department is a leading one at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
The first head of the department was Doctor of Chemistry, Prof. Triskach Volodymyr Yosypovych - 2002-2007.
From 2008 to the present, the department is headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Olena Orlova.

Under the guidance of experienced teachers of the department diploma works in pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy are planned and successfully performed by graduate students. 3rd and 4th year students defend term papers in pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical chemistry.
The department has always paid great attention to the practical training of students, mastering practical skills, expanding the organizational and methodological base, strengthening ties between the department and pharmaceutical institutions.
Teachers took a number of measures to optimize the teaching of disciplines of the department in accordance with the decisions of methodological meetings.
Employees of the department actively implemented the latest technologies of teaching and control of students' knowledge (tests, computer training). During the academic year, students and students of the full-time internship cycle undergo computer training in all sections of pharmaceutical analysis and pharmacognosy. The system of computer testing of students with questions of bases KROK-1 and KROK-2 is adjusted. A "Krokov base" of all disciplines was created.
For all disciplines taught at the department, laboratory journals have been created for practical work, which allows to optimize and redistribute students' study time.
During the years of the department's existence, a teaching staff was formed, 70% of which were young people - graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University.
For 14 years of existence of the department 7 dissertation works were performed, the results of which were introduced into the scientific and practical work of pharmaceutical and medical universities of the country. During this period, teachers of the department have published more than 150 scientific papers and methodological literature.
The period from 2014 to the present
In December 2014, the department began its activities in Rubizhne, where the Luhansk State Medical University was evacuated in connection with an anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine. The department is initially located on the basis of Rubizhne professional chemical-technological lyceum.
Teachers of the department: Head of the Department Prof., Doctor of Biological Sciences Orlova OA, Ph.D., Assoc. Tkachenko VG, Doctor of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Terninko II (2014-2015 academic year), Ezopova VV assistant (2014-2016).
For three years (2014-2017) the department has re-formed the material base for laboratory and practical work (chemical reagents, laboratory glassware, laboratory equipment) and restored the educational and methodological fund.
During this period, teachers of the department published 10 scientific papers. In 2015, one of the research activities of the department was completed: "Biochemical changes in body tissues in the age aspect and the possibility of their correction" (№ state registration 0111 U 000280) - research supervisor Prof. Orlova OA
Employees of the department carry out active career guidance work among students of schools of Luhansk region. Teachers of the department continue cooperation with the Small Academy of the Ministry of Education and Science of Luhansk region.
The staff of the department hopefully accepts the prospects of formation and development of our university and is an active participant in its new history.

Participation of the department in conducting the I All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Kharkiv on the basis of NUPh, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Head of the Department, Doctor of Pharmacy, Prof. Georgiyants VA. From our department for the second stage of the Olympiad was recommended a 4th year student Trofimova VV, she took 13th place in the discipline among 21 participants.

On May 13, 2019, the traditional meeting of the Student Scientific Society of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy took place as part of the University Science Day, where members of the SNT reported on their research. 6 reports were presented at the meeting.
1st year students accompanied their reports with bright chemical experiments: Aristova A., Gavrilova Y., Miroshnichenko D., Shulga D., Yarosh E., Ushenko B., Zaitseva D. Speakers from the 2nd year were students 10 F gr. Shetylova O. and Verzilova K. with the research topic: "Comparative evaluation of methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis of sulfacyl-sodium" and the 4th year represented Article 12 F gr. Trofimova V. with the report: "Determination of the content of naphazoline in smears of the nasal cavity by absorption in the UV spectrum."
All members of the SNT department received certificates of participation, and 4th year student Trofimova V. was recommended to participate in the conference for the Day of Science of the University.
