The Department of Physics was founded in 1956, the year the institute opened.
The first head and its organizer was an associate professor, Ph.D. Morozov Matviy Stepanovych. Under his leadership from 1956 to 1962 the material and technical base of the department was created. Much attention was paid to the organization of the educational process in the day and evening departments, the development of methodological documentation.
From 1962 to 1984 the head of the department was a senior lecturer Petrov Eugene. During these years, the department held annual regional meetings of heads of departments of physics, meetings of the basic department of physics, developed a laboratory workshop on biophysics and medical equipment.
In 1964, a laboratory of medical electronics was opened at the department, which was headed by assistant Lebid ON
For 15 years, the laboratory has been developing and manufacturing samples of new medical equipment proposed by scientists of the institute, standardized and repaired electronic medical equipment at all departments. The complex developed by the laboratory for studying the rhythm of heart contractions was tested by the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and in addition to its components, such as cardiointervalograph, white was introduced into medical support of human space flight. On the basis of this development in 1969 the first in the history of the department dissertation of the assistant Lebid ON was defended.
From 1985 to 1990 the head of the department was associate professor, Ph.D. Kuvichka Iryna Mykolayivna. With her active participation, the material and technical base of the department was strengthened, the first coordination meeting of the heads of the departments of medical and biological physics of medical universities of Ukraine was held. Associate Professor Kuvichka IM - author of 102 scientific papers and methodical recommendations, under her guidance one candidate's dissertation was completed and defended.
In 1991, the Department of Medical and Biological Physics was merged with the Department of Informatics. Its head was an associate professor, Ph.D. Semesenko Mykhailo Porfirovych, where he worked until 1997. During these years, a lot of work has been done on the methodological support of the educational process with the use of computers.
From 1997 to 1999 the department was headed by Professor, Doctor of Medicine, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine Dobrin Borys Yuliyovych.
Since 2000, the department has been headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Yankovych Halchenko. For the first time in the history of the department, in 2001 a postgraduate course was opened.
Teachers of the department have published 736 scientific articles and abstracts.
Over the years, the staff of the department have been honest in the performance of their duties, as evidenced by the large number of cases of material and moral encouragement by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the university administration. Teachers have always shown and are showing an active civic position, conducting educational work among students during school and extracurricular time.
The modern department of medical and biological physics, medical informatics and biostatistics of LSMU based in Rubizhne was founded on January 31, 2015.
