In July 1956, the Department of Human Anatomy of the Luhansk State Medical Institute began to exist. From 1956 to 1984 the head of the Department of Human Anatomy - Tchaikovsky Irina Iosypivna Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Higher Education.
Under the guidance and with the participation of Professor II Tchaikovsky at the department performed work on the problems of higher school pedagogy: "Application of the method of individual tasks in the study of human anatomy." І.І. Tchaikovsky is the founder of the Luhansk regional union of anatomists, histologists, embryologists, a member of the board of the republican union AGE. The basic direction of scientific research of the department during the leadership of Professor II Tchaikovsky was the study of cyto- and angioarchitectonics of different parts of the human brain in normal, ontogenesis, as well as in the case of pathological changes.

From 1984 to 2010 the department was headed by the winner of the State Prize of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Koveshnikov.
Professor VG Koveshnikov was a highly qualified teacher, paying special attention to problem lectures. He has prepared and published several dozen textbooks on normal anatomy. Under his editorship (in collaboration with Prof. II Bobrik) was published "International Anatomical Nomenclature" (2001), also under his editorship was published improvised "Human Anatomy" in 3 volumes (Ukrainian, Russian and English) ). Professor VG Koveshnikov is a well-known scientist-anatomist not only in Ukraine but also abroad. He has spoken at international congresses (OSA, India, Mexico, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, etc.). He did an internship at New York University. The results of his many years of research have been published in more than 600 publications, including two dozen monographs. Among them - "Dictionary of terms and concepts in human anatomy" (1980), "Medical Anthropology" (1992), "Skeletal tissues" (2000) and others. Volodymyr Heorhiyovych is the author of five inventions and 11 innovations. Professor VG Koveshnikov trained 19 doctors and 53 candidates of medical sciences working in Ukraine and abroad. Many of them headed and still head the morphological departments: prof. Ya.I. Fedonyuk (Ternopil), prof. V.Z. Sikora, prof. A.M. Romanyuk (Sumy), prof. NK Kashirina, prof. VSPykalyuk (Simferopol), prof. TV Pavlova (Belgorod, Russia), prof. VI Luzin, prof. O.Yu. Bibik, prof. Yu.M. Wolf, prof. SO Kashchenko (Lugansk), prof. V.A. Pastukhova (Kyiv). Professor VG Koveshnikov - Academician of International Integrative Anthropology (1993), Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine (1994), Polish Academy of Medicine (1998) and A. Schweizer World Academy (1991). Professor VG Koveshnikov - President (1998), and then Honorary President of the Ukrainian and Chairman of the Luhansk Regional Branch (1984-2015) of the Scientific Union of Anatomists, Histologists, Embryologists and Topographers, Chairman of the Specialized Defense Council for the defense of doctoral (candidate) dissertations (Lugansk ), member of the Specialized Council for the Defense of Doctoral Dissertations (Kharkiv), Editor-in-Chief of the journals "Ukrainian Medical Almanac" and "Ukrainian Morphological Almanac", member of the editorial board of the journals "Morphology" (St. Petersburg), "Problems of Osteology" (Kyiv), "Bulletin morphology "(Vinnytsia) and others. At the same time, Professor VG
Under the guidance of Professor Koveshnikov VG (1984–2010) at the Department of Human Anatomy developed a new scientific direction: "Influence of environmental factors on the morphogenesis of bone, immune and endocrine systems", the department received new premises with new technologically modern equipment of the educational process (training halls, freezers, corpses) , fans) and scientific work (morphometric, histological, electron microscopic laboratories, vivarium). The department participated in the development of morphological aspects of disaster medicine. This work was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine. On the basis of the department annual scientific-practical conferences "Morphogenesis of bone, immune and endocrine systems of the body in the industrial region", "Biominerology" were held. In 1998, the city of Luhansk hosted the II National Congress of Anatomists, Histologists, Embryologists and Topographers, at which Prof. Koveshnikov VG was elected Chairman of the Scientific Society AGET of Ukraine. In 2002, he was elected honorary chairman of AGET. In 1997, a doctoral program was opened at the department, which was successfully completed by Associate Professor VI Luzin (2001) and Associate Professor SA Kashchenko (2004).
From 2010 to 2015 the Department of Human Anatomy was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Luzin Vladislav Igorovich was the first doctoral student in the history of the university.
In 1987 he graduated from Luhansk State Medical Institute. From 1987 to 1990 he studied in graduate school under the guidance of Professor VG Koveshnikov. He defended his dissertation on October 22, 1991 on "Peculiarities of growth, structure and formation of skeletal bones in chronic renal failure." Since 1990 he worked as an assistant, since 1991 - a senior lecturer and since 1995 - associate professor of human anatomy. In parallel, from 1992 to 1995, he served as head of the department of graduate school and clinical practice. In the period from 1997 to 2000 he studied for a doctorate under the guidance of Professor VG Koveshnikov at the Department of Human Anatomy (was the first doctoral student in the history of the university). In 2001 he defended his dissertation on "Features of growth, structure,
