Every year on October 18, the whole Europe celebrates Anti-Trafficking Day, as trafficking is one of the most widespread violations of human rights and freedoms.
Trafficking in human beings is a crime that can be committed by men, women and children for the purpose of forced labour and sexual exploitation.
Anti-Trafficking Day is an occasion to declare an urgent problem, the need to unite the efforts of state authorities, local governments and the public to provide assistance to victims.
Trafficking in human beings remains an acute problem in Ukraine. The protracted armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, the prevalence of fraudulent recruitment schemes, financial hardship, low living standards and other risk factors make Ukraine’s population more vulnerable to trafficking.
Announcing the course of European integration, Ukraine has acceded to the main international regulations and formed national legislation in the field of combating trafficking in human beings.
The key task of the Ministry of Social Policy as a national coordinator in the field of combating trafficking in human beings is to form in society an understanding that human dignity and human rights are the highest values, as well as prevention and intolerance, zero tolerance to all forms of human exploitation.
Trafficking in human beings is considered a particularly serious crime in Ukraine and many other countries. According to Article 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to 8 years.
In order to prevent human trafficking, appropriate measures are taken annually in Ukraine at the national level, which include video broadcasting of social advertising in the media and conducting an information campaign among the country’s citizens.
Realizing the seriousness and scale of this negative phenomenon, the Department of Foreign, Latin and Ukrainian languages together with the student youth of our university joined the celebration of the European Day against Trafficking in Human Beings. We show our intolerance, public understanding of the urgent issue.
We understand that anyone can be enslaved, and the victims of modern slave traders can be people with a low level of education, as well as those with higher education.
Therefore, only by joining forces, we are able to overcome the problem of human trafficking in our society!
